The Press Sphere

In his article titled, The Press Becomes the Press Sphere, Jarvis comments on the changing world of the press. Many good points are made in his article but I particularly like his observation about the changing world of the press. “It’s more of a process rater than a product” he states, there is “no limit of sources and handlers and distributors and curators and perspectives” Jarvis goes on. I think this is a very valid point. While the world of news is changing it is only becoming more interactive and more in depth. This is because of the expanding world of news. Today there are even more sources of news. Not only are there radio shows and newspapers that provide us with the latest, now however the press has expanded to television and online sources as well. Not only do we have access to news stories that are happening in our area but we look at news that is happening all over the world.

Jarvis also describes how previously most of the information we received was filtered through the press (as demonstrated in the first figure) however; I feel that the world still receives news this way. Today, news sources all have a certain bias, too often I feel that we accept what is given to us rather than searching for the other sides of the story. Magazines like Us Weekly, People and OK share stories with us about the latest celebrities and what they are up to. We read it because it is gossip and it is fascinating, yet most of the stories are based on pure fiction. Still, somehow these magazines are still making the most of what people want to believe. The gossip goes further and we only want to hear more.

  1. Interesting point about how a lot of our news still comes through filters. You're right about that, and trying to recognize and understand the work of those filters is important.
