The New York Times and Blogs

While following the Wired Science blog it is clear the differences between blogs and The New York Times. While The New York Times attempts to take the more traditional approach and present things like a newspaper would on their website.  Blogs take a new world approach and attempt to delve into one subject more deeply, adding video’s pictures and links to their arguments and articles. While the differences are clear the similarities seem to be more concealed but nonetheless are prevalent. Both of these sources of information are sources in which you wouldn’t stumble across by accident. These sources of news are not visited by random readers but by people who are looking to become more educated on a certain issue whether that is the news or a certain blog focusing on a certain topic. While places like Yahoo news get readers that are simply trying to search for something on the internet, shop or just check their email; The New York Times gets visitors that are specifically looking to read an article or learn something new about the latest happenings in the world. In terms of press spheres, I think both of these sources would fall, into Jarvis’ figure displaying “the me-sphere”. Showing that we can surround ourselves with news from many different source. Often however I feel that people do not make the commitment to educate themselves with the many different press spheres that surround them and instead allow their news to consist of whatever comes to them. Both the similarities of each source of information are clear and while they provide easy access to information and to similar audiences they also differ in the content and purpose.

  1. I had the same experience. I felt that although the blogs that I read did not necessarily have that much in common, they still found there way into the same press sphere. Weird how that works.
